Is Kevin Stefanski's coaching future about to take a dramatic turn? The whispers coming out of Cleveland suggest that after six seasons and two Coach of the Year awards, the Browns might be parting ways with their head coach. But where could he land?
The answer, surprisingly, might be Green Bay. The Packers, who were unexpectedly defeated by the Browns 13-10 in Week 3, are now in a precarious position. Despite making the playoffs, they've clinched the No. 7 seed for the third consecutive year. Imagine, without the expanded postseason in 2020, they'd be facing a four-year playoff drought!
This situation places significant pressure on Packers coach Matt LaFleur and General Manager Brian Gutekunst. In June 2024, new team president Ed Policy, a lifelong Browns fan, made it clear that neither would receive contract extensions before the end of the 2025 season. Both are currently signed through 2026, and Policy isn't a fan of the 'lame-duck' scenario, where a coach or GM is in their final year without a new contract.
This sets the stage for a critical wild-card round. LaFleur and Gutekunst will need to prove their worth. A disappointing playoff exit could lead Policy to explore other options.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Stefanski, having spent his entire career in the NFC North with the Vikings before taking the Cleveland job in 2020, could find himself back in the division. A loss next weekend, when the Packers face either Chicago or Philadelphia, could be the catalyst. This could trigger the first Green Bay coaching search since 2019, potentially opening the door for Stefanski.
And this is the part most people miss... The Packers' playoff performance in recent years is crucial.
