Heads up, Treasure Valley drivers: Prepare for some I-84 disruption! The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) is gearing up for a significant closure that will impact your commute. Starting January 16th at 10 p.m., the eastbound lanes of I-84 between Garrity (Exit 38) and Ten Mile (Exit 42) will be completely shut down. This closure will last until January 19th at 5 a.m., so plan your routes accordingly!
During the closure, eastbound traffic will be directed to exit and re-enter the highway using the newly constructed ramps. Make sure to follow the detour map provided by ITD to navigate the changes smoothly.
But that's not all! Westbound I-84 travelers should also be aware of changes. During the nights of the closure, westbound traffic will be reduced to two lanes. However, all westbound lanes will be open during the daytime, from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.
So, what's all the fuss about? ITD is undertaking a major project. The closure will allow crews to install a whopping 16 girders for the first of two new flyover ramps. Each of these massive girders is approximately 117 feet long and weighs around 42,000 pounds! That's some serious construction!
And this is the part most people miss: Ongoing nighttime lane restrictions in this area will continue through March in both directions. At least two lanes will remain open overnight, but expect potential delays.
This project is essential for improving traffic flow, but it's bound to cause some headaches. What are your thoughts on this planned closure? Do you think the benefits outweigh the inconvenience? Share your opinions in the comments below!
