Charging Your Tesla as a Renter: A Challenge Overcome!
Imagine owning a sleek Tesla Model Y, but facing the daily dilemma of relying solely on Superchargers. It's a hassle, right? Well, I'm here to share my journey and the innovative solution I found to this common problem.
When I made the switch to electric, I knew I had to find a better way. As a tenant, I faced unique challenges with home charging, but I was determined to find a solution that worked for me and my Tesla.
The Rental Dilemma: Parking and Charging
In a rental community, parking spots can be tricky. I had an assigned spot, but it wasn't conveniently located. My car was parked in front of my neighbor's door, and I needed a solution that didn't rely on their spot being vacant.
Finding the Right Approach
I had a few options, but each had its drawbacks. Using the Mobile Connector was feasible, but only when my neighbor's spot was available. Extending the cord with a 10-gauge extension seemed practical, but I wanted a more reliable and safer option for my expensive car.
That's when I discovered the NACS to NACS extension cord. It offered an additional 16 feet of length, keeping the Mobile Connector off the ground and away from potential hazards. It was a bit pricier, but the peace of mind and convenience were worth it.
Implementing the Solution
The process was straightforward: connect the Mobile Connector to my house, then the NACS extension, and finally, plug it into my Tesla. It worked like a charm, but there are a few things to keep in mind.
Security and Safety
These cables can attract thieves, especially in areas where copper wiring is valuable. I keep mine secure and visible from my Ring camera, but it's essential to be aware of this potential issue. Consider investing in cable covers to protect your investment.
Charging Speed and Range
Tesla's Mobile Connector provides about 3-5 miles of range per hour when plugged into a standard outlet. From 30% to 80%, it can take over 24 hours to charge fully. It's a slow process, but it's a reliable and cost-effective way to add range to your Tesla.
