A new Chinese dining establishment is set to enrich the culinary scene in central Pennsylvania, and it’s not just about the food—it's a heartfelt homage to the flavors of childhood.

Meet Chi Siu, the enthusiastic owner of TĀNG Dumplings, which has opened its doors at 1134 Mae Street in Derry Township. This restaurant focuses on serving authentic dim sum, including the beloved xiao long bao (soup dumplings), alongside a selection of stir-fried dishes. Siu also runs Asoul Ramen in Lower Allen Township, among other culinary ventures throughout the region.

Dim sum, a term that translates to "touch of heart," typically features an array of small dishes enjoyed at breakfast. For Siu, these cherished bites hold deep sentimental value, as they were lovingly prepared by his mother during his upbringing.

"Dim sum is my childhood," Siu expressed with warmth. "It evokes memories of family gatherings, and every time I savor dim sum, it brings back a flood of feelings and nostalgia from my days in China."

Siu's roots trace back to Guangzhou, formerly known as Canton, situated in the Guangdong province of southern China. He moved to the United States at the age of 15 and settled in central Pennsylvania when he turned 30. At 45, he feels compelled to share the essence of his culture and his passion for food with the local community.

"There aren't many establishments where people can enjoy sharing dishes together, especially in this area," Siu noted. "The nearest spot to find decent dim sum is a two-hour drive to Philadelphia."

TĀNG's menu is brimming with delectable offerings, including steamed pork buns, a variety of soup dumplings filled with chicken, crab, and pork, as well as crispy duck and pork potstickers. Dessert lovers will also find a range of sweet treats and boba tea options to indulge in.

The restaurant's ambiance is enhanced by traditional Chinese decor, featuring booths painted in the vibrant red that is synonymous with Chinese gazebos. Large gazebo-style booths are complemented by traditional artwork adorning the walls.

"The decor here is very much in tune with Asian aesthetics," Siu chuckled, appreciating the cultural representation in his restaurant.

Looking ahead, Siu is eager to expand his culinary footprint beyond Pennsylvania, with plans for a new location in Maryland and even considering options in upstate New York.

TĀNG Dumplings welcomes guests from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
