Venezuela's Political Landscape: A Shifting Narrative Amidst Shifting Alliances!
In a significant development, Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, has asserted that Nicolás Maduro remains the legitimate president of the nation. In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Rodríguez, speaking from Caracas, declared, "I can tell you President Nicolás Maduro is the legitimate president." She further emphasized her legal background, stating, "I will tell you this as a lawyer, that I am. Both President Maduro and Cilia Flores, the first lady, are both innocent."
This declaration comes at a pivotal moment, with Maduro reportedly in U.S. federal detention. Rodríguez, who has stepped into the role of acting president, appears to be navigating a complex diplomatic environment. Notably, she has been engaging with the Trump administration, with U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright visiting Caracas to discuss the distribution of Venezuela's substantial oil reserves. This engagement signals a potential thaw in relations, a stark contrast to the previous stance.
Rodríguez elaborated on her current responsibilities, stating, "I can tell you I am in charge of the presidency of Venezuela, as it’s stated clearly in the constitution of Venezuela. And from the amount of work that I have, from how busy I am, I can tell you it’s very, very hard work and we’re doing it completely day by day."
Her ascent to power has been anything but ordinary. As the daughter of a revolutionary and having been previously sanctioned by the first Trump administration, Rodríguez's journey has been unconventional. Following Maduro's capture, she initially voiced strong criticism of the U.S. military action. However, her tone has since softened, indicating a willingness to engage with U.S. pressure and demands. This shift has even opened the door to a potential visit to the United States, following two phone conversations with President Trump.
"I have been invited to the States," Rodríguez confirmed to NBC News, adding that "we’re contemplating coming there once we establish this cooperation and we can move forward with everything."
But here's where it gets controversial... While there are signs of diplomatic engagement, the current government has not entirely moved away from the authoritarian tendencies of Maduro or his predecessor, Hugo Chávez, who laid the groundwork for Venezuela's current security state. In a stark reminder of this, prominent opposition figure Juan Pablo Guanipa was rearrested and placed under house arrest shortly after his release from prison. His son, Ramon Guanipa, shared this information on X.
Secretary Wright, however, expressed optimism about the current cooperation, referencing the adage "Trust but verify." He told NBC News' Kristen Welker, "We’ve been dealing with Delcy for five weeks now. It’s been an amazing cooperation. She’s delivered information. Everything we know so far has turned out to be true. She’s made enormous positive changes, including already changing the hydrocarbon law in the country in the first few weeks. So I would say that cooperation is off to a tremendous start."
Financially, the impact is already being felt, with over $1 billion in Venezuelan oil already sold and an additional $5 billion in oil sales anticipated in the coming months.
